Mario sort of being mickey mouse, pokemon being heavily design through silouhettes (so a child could draw from memory) or Link I guess is Peter Pan. You see a lot of YT theories and stuff going around and you learn how dark Disney source material is. So Nintendo barrowing from Disney which is borrowing from old fables and what not, all in a technical field like video games produces some weird results.
